We all have busy lives and for some of us eating is the last thing on our minds. Once we feel that growling in our stomach, we just want to get food in there as quickly as possible so we can get back to work. Likely we opt for something quick, such as a fast-food option. ‘Fast Food’ doesn’t only include McDonalds, Wendy’s, Taco Bell and the like. There are healthier fast-food options out there such as Sweetgreen, Just Salad, Cava or even Chipotle. There are many ways to make some of these ‘Fast Food’ options healthier for those of us who live busy lifestyles and are always on the go. Here are some tips for making fast food healthier:
1. Find a place where you can create your own bowl or salad.Places like this have a lot of optionality for you to pick out ingredients to make your meal nutritious and fulfilling when you don’t have the option to make something at home.
2. Choose colorful whole food ingredients for your meal.Taste the rainbow and try to add as much color into your meals as you can. Salad places often offer tons of topping options for you to choose from.
3. Choose grilled or baked proteins and vegetables over anything fried.
4. Opt for a dressing with less ingredients. Most places will have the option of using lemon or olive oil instead of those pre-made heavier creamy dressings. If there are only pre-made dressings, find out what exactly is in it or keep a bottle of good quality olive oil or balsamic vinegar at your desk, so you know exactly what you are getting. Tip: ask for the dressing on the side!
5. Watch Portions. Often times the portions are a lot larger than what you would make for yourself at home. Opt for smaller sizes if possible or try sharing larger portions with a friend. You can even ask for an extra bowl and separate the meal into two meals and save one for another time.
